Then! surveys the sounds of Holdsworth's touring quartet of that time, a singular band among those playing high energy, electric "jazz rock." If there is a category for this music, no easy term leaps to mind save for pedestrian aphorisms like the antithesis of smooth jazz, or warp factor 11. Excepting for two "Zones," all included tracks were culled from two sets played on May 5, 1990. In Then! Holdsworth enthusiasts and newcomers alike will find arresting, dark and delicate harmonic conceptions: singular and infinite reserves of cascading chords and inspired solos. Fans will find in this set a lens into how this band stretched out and interpreted Holdsworth's studio work, complete with mercurial twists and daunting risks, and of course the aberrations that few other than these musicians will recognize. Keyboardist Steve Hunt used many of Holdsworth's original synth patches performed on Synthaxe, affording the band a huge sound, and allowing Hunt to deftly solo and comp opposite Holdsworth. Husband's drumming here is simply world class. Johnson's bass provides the rock solid foundation and timepiece for the music; and these recordings demonstrate his unique power and voice in the most challenging of musical circumstances--quite a contrast from his recent work backing James Taylor.

Then! renders an audio portrait of a musical master widely acclaimed for the myriad ways he expanded the physical boundaries and voice of his instrument, and as a group leader who created the context for his bands to flourish in the realm of improvisatory color, muscular abandon, and the deepest levels of intuitive musical communication.
